Practical Joke (30 Ways: Shinichi/Ran)
Title: Practical Joke
Fandom: Detective Conan
Characters: Kudo Shinichi/Mouri Ran
Theme: #5—books
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: I do not own Detective Conan. All characters are the property of Gosho Aoyama. I simply threaten to make them watch old Barney tapes unless they obey me. Trust me, they listen.
Summary: Shinichi is such a big Holmes fan that Ran just can’t resist messing with him about it.

It was one of those things that Ran stumbled across by accident. And she found herself staring at it for a very long time. Like a train wreck, she couldn’t tear her eyes away from it. No matter how much she wanted to.

And as she stared at it, she found herself thinking of a possibility for it.

It was cruel, and not at all something a person like her should or would do. But at the end of the day, the idea was just too good to pass up. Shinichi had been babbling about Holmes a little too much as of late…maybe it was time to teach him a little lesson…

-o-

She was in the kitchen of the Kudo house, baking a birthday cake for her father. She wanted it to be a surprise, and so Shinichi had graciously offered her the use of his kitchen for the purpose of making the cake. He was staying out of her way, saying he was going to read in the library for a while.

So Ran went about her business, humming lightly under her breath, as she waited for the explosion.

Sure enough, there was a loud shout from the direction of the library. It was followed by the sound of a door flying open and loud, quick footsteps stomping towards the kitchen. A moment later, Shinichi appeared in the kitchen doorway; he did not look pleased. “Ran…” he growled through clenched teeth.

“Yes, sweetie?” she replied innocently, not looking up from the bowl she was stirring.

“Do you have any idea how this,” he held up what appeared to be a volume of some sort, “got into my copy of A Study in Scarlet?” The cover of the book in his hand portrayed a thin, hawk-like man reclining on a couch.

Ran looked at it for a moment, then asked in that same innocent voice, “What is it?”

“Some sort of manga,” he said. “About Sherlock Holmes.”

“Oh.”

“And Watson.”

“That makes sense.”

“…in bed.”

“I had no idea. But whatever floats your boat, dear.”

By this point, Shinichi was red-faced and sputtering too hard to continue the discussion. In a momentary throwback to something more suited to his Conan days, he threw a minor tantrum. He hurtled the manga at the floor, turned on his heel, and stormed back to his library. He even slammed the door shut for good measure.

Chuckling to herself, Ran picked up the fallen book and smoothed out a newly-formed crease in the cover. She wasn’t usually prone to playing pranks like this—particularly not on Shinichi. She loved him dearly, and his Holmes obsession was a part of who he was. But every once in a while, an opportunity like this dropped into her lap, and it was just too good to pass up. In this case, opportunity consisted of a Sherlock Holmes yaoi doujinshi.

PS. Before anyone asks, YES. There actually exists a yaoi manga (although I guess you could call it a doujin) about Sherlock and Watson. That involves smexing. I was made aware of this by jeva_chan, and thought it would be an absolutely delicious way to mess with Shinichi’s head, poor fanboy that he is.

Thanks for reading, all! Much love!

Wow. Just wow. XD

This reminds me of how I've started watching DVDs of the Grenada series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Whenever Watson screws up or doesn't manage to follow Holmes' logic, he scolds him like a little kid. Actually, Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Holmes reminds me . . . of House. o.o

Shin'ichi must've gotten into a fanboy debate at least once in his life, but never about something like that. *shudder* I can see that happening in Holmes fandom, too. There's Watson, even after he's married, eagerly following Holmes on his cases--ack! Some people take stories down roads they should never go!

That was danged funny, but man, Ran got him where it hurt! Wonder what could be Shin'ichi's sweet revenge . . . . Good job!

We got my dad the Jeremy Brett Holmes movies. They're his favorites of that character :D I haven't actually watched them myself, though. I should really pick up a Holmes book sometime and give it a go...

Oh, I'd like to think that Shinichi and Heiji have debates over such things--baseball vs. soccer, Ellery Queen vs. Sherlock Holmes, Osaka vs. Tokyo, and all that. And from what I've heard, the Holmes fandom does like their slash on occasion ^_~ Never ventured into it m'self, though--would need to have read the books first.

Thanks, hon! Glad you liked it! *glomps*

There's a reason for that... House is based on Holmes! He's a medical detective, his name is HOUSE, his best friend is Wilson, he's a drug addict and a complete bastard with people... Seriously, check the Wikipedia article, House was intentionally based on Holmes.

Srsly should've seen that coming. ^^ House and Wilson. (Watch ficcers slash them, too. Blecch.)

The main difference with House, IMHO, is that he's antisocial where Holmes is too bent on mental stimulation. Granted, the effect is similar, but the motivations differ.

Maybe Shinichi babbled about Holmes one too many times? ^_~
