It was raining.
Well, actually, that was a bit of an understatement. It might be a bit more accurate to say that the entire city had suddenly and instantaneously been transported across hundreds of miles to sit directly beneath Niagara Falls. It was obviously the work of ninjas.
Klavier Gavin was standing just outside the courthouse, the large concrete awning shielding him from the storm. He had his keys in his hand and was debating as to whether or not to run for his motorcycle and head home. But it seemed that every time he was just thinking that it was easing up and he could make that run for it, the rain would redouble its efforts to pound through the concrete, and he would be forced to reconsider.
He had been waiting for a fair amount of time when he saw a familiar figure sprinting through the storm. Still, he had to blink in surprise. Apollo Justice was completely soaked, and was carrying a cardboard box, hugging it close to his chest. “Forehead?” he called as the defense attorney drew closer.
“Prosecutor Gavin!” Apollo nearly skidded to a stop. “Y-you’re still here?”
“Ja. Storm’s a bit too much right now,” he said with a shrug. He glanced at the box curiously, but decided not to ask. It was probably something related to the case they were currently working. “If you want a ride, I can give you one?” Klavier offered. “Just have to wait until it eases up a bit.”
He was a bit surprised when Apollo shook his head. “No, I’d better not. Thanks, though.”
Klavier raised one perfectly-shaped eyebrow. “Are you sure? It’s no trouble, and—“ He stopped when he heard a sound. A faint mewling. And it was coming from…Apollo? “Forehead? What was that?”
“N-nothing!” Apollo jumped, jostling the box in his hands.
Apparently the contents of the box did not appreciate that because they startled meowing.
Apollo looked a bit embarrassed now, but he moved under the overhang before he set down the box. “I f-found them…there’s a veteranary clinic the next block over, was going to take them there and make sure they’re okay. That’s why I don’t need a ride.”
He drew the cardboard flaps back to reveal several kittens in the bottom of the box. They were all curled up against each other, their gray and white fur completely soaked from the storm, and mewing pitifully. And they were so tiny…
Klavier could actually feel himself melt.
Without really thinking about it, he reached down and carefully picked one of them up, barely hearing Apollo’s confused, “Prosecutor Gavin?” Instead, he just cradled the little ball of wet fuzz in his hands for closer inspection. “Just a baby…” he murmured. “Eyes aren’t even open yet…”
“I know,” Apollo sighed.
“Where did you find them?” Klavier asked without looking up from the kitten in his hands.
“In a bag in an alley,” was the blunt reply. “Looked like someone just dumped them there. I barely heard them over the storm, but I couldn’t just leave them…” He glanced down at the ones still curled up in the box, his expression growing a bit distant. “They don’t have anyone else.”
This time Klavier turned to glance at him with a smile, understanding exactly what he really meant. “All alone in the world…” He chuckled, and it was a sad sound. “It’s nice to feel needed, ja?”
“Ja—I mean, yeah…” Apollo quickly corrected himself. “So I grabbed a box and started running.”
Klavier lifted the kitten up to eye-level. It was pawing at the air, letting out high-pitched mews in protest at being separated from the others…and then its little gray paw bumped into Klavier’s nose. Before he even realized what he was saying, he turned to Apollo. “Forehead!”
Apollo jumped. “Y-yes?”
“…can I keep him?”
