Disclaimer: I don't own Detective Conan. But I do have homemade hand-puppets for each character...that's normal, right?
The small boy sat back in his chair with a sigh and stretched his arms as far over his head as they would reach before dropping them back to the desk in front of him. The fall of the Black Organization had allowed him to come clean about his ‘little’ secret, but it had also come with an expected downside: lots and lots of homework.
Yawning and rolling his shoulders, Kudo Shinichi (known up until recently as Edogawa Conan) went back to the file on the desk. He’d been reading for ages, but this was promising to be perhaps a bit more interesting; he’d somehow scored the file on the Miyano family. Maybe he could learn a little bit more about Haibara this way, as she was still awfully reluctant to share much about herself and her past.
As he neared the bottom of the page, though, he saw something that made him pause. That couldn’t be right…unless there was something she either hadn’t told him. Or maybe…
As if the thought had summoned her, she appeared in the doorway. “Why are you still reading?”
“It’s gotta get done,” he yawned again.
“You’re obsessive,” she shook her head and turned to leave him to his work.
“Haibara…before you go, I have a question,” Shinichi said on a whim, glancing back down at the file in front of him, the record of the Miyano family. It couldn’t hurt to ask, right?
“…you only had one sibling, right?” he asked. “Your sister Akemi?”
“That’s right,” she nodded warily.
“This is going to sound crazy, but…are you sure?” he asked, holding the file out for her to read. “Because according to this, that’s not exactly right.”
Ai walked back to the desk and grabbed the folder. Quickly she skimmed over the typed words until she found the part that had sparked his curiosity. There, it stated that the Miyano family had…three children. Two girls and a boy.
She couldn’t quite stop her jaw from dropping. “This isn’t possible…”
According to a note attached to the file, the two girls were being initiated into the Organization, but the boy had disappeared as an infant. The parents’ claim was that the baby had succumbed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and been taken care of quickly. Something about it didn’t seem to ring right, and it seemed even the person writing the note hadn’t quite believed it, but…
That was all there was.
“I don’t understand,” she said after a moment of processing; she passed the folder back to him. “This can’t be right…” She sighed and looked away. “I have a brother.” That was typical Haibara, though. Calm, practical, analytical. The record showed in clear black and white that she’d had a brother, and the record spoke for itself in this case.
“Are you all right?” Shinichi asked. Maybe he shouldn’t have said anything…
“I’m fine. I just—didn’t know,” she waved it off with that same practicality before pausing. “But…I wonder if this is true, that he died. It seems a little too…something.” She actually smiled slightly. “Maybe he’s alive out there somewhere. Wouldn’t that just be the most peculiar thing…”
“ACHOO!” Hakuba Saguru instinctively fished around in his pocket for a handkerchief.
Walking beside him, Kuroba smirked. “Uh-oh, someone’s talking about you…”
Hakuba glared at his rival with slightly-watery eyes. “That’s ridiculous.”
